B-Side Brings It Back To Brum
World-class ‘Graffiti’ artists, international street dance stars, award-winning emcees plus the biggest names in Birmingham’s home-grown hip-hop talent flocked to Southside in their thousands
for Birmingham’s second, annual B-Side Hip-Hop Festival.
Produced by Birmingham Hippodrome in partnership with local Hip-Hop artists Breakmission, Juice Aleem, Graffitiartist.com and Mickeal ‘Marso’ Riviere, this year’s festival saw over 5000 visitors, more than 50 artists and performers from across the globe as well as an additional 200 street dance and break dance competitors descend on Birmingham Hippodrome to battle it out to be crowned Break Mission Just Jam International champion.
Other highlights from the event included a live set from Birmingham-based emcee Lady Sanity, performances from Hip-hop dance artist Boogie Frantick and UK rap artists Strange U as well as Prit, Nucleo, T-Kid, Boogie Frantik, PoeOne, Link, IMD, Bubbles and Sic-Nis among others.
Brand new for 2017, this year’s festival also saw graffiti artists from across the globe take over Southside for a full weekend of live street art and interactive workshops taking place across the Hippodrome’s Main Foyer spaces and surrounding city streets. Other workshops taking place across the weekend included Sweat The Technique master-classes in Breaking, Poppin’ and hip-hop lead by PoeOne, Boogie
Frantik and Link Bink, an introduction to the history of masquerade and ‘Neo-Mmanwu’ with Florence Okoye, an exploration of ‘Women, Hip-Hop and Afrofuturism’ with Latifah Stone and a four day hip-hop research lab curated by Festival Producer and award-winning choreographer Mickeal ‘Marso’ Riviere for semi/professional and emerging Hip-Hop artists, running from 15-19 May in DanceXChange.
