We caught up with their latest recruit, Nurse Emma Hinchcliffe, to talk all things aesthetics, and how to get those Kylie-inspired lips!

Hi Emma, thanks for talking to us today. So tell us a little bit about your background?

Hi. So, I am a registered nurse with 17 years worth of experience. I became interested in aesthetic nursing six years ago and initially undertook training in the administration of Botulinum Toxin (Botox) for the upper face. I have since gone on to expand my knowledge and skills to encompass other aesthetic treatments such as dermal fillers, chemical peels and skin boosting treatments.

So, tell us a little more about about treatments- what is the usual process when booking in with you at Emma Brown Hair & Beauty?

We’d book you in first for a consultation to discuss any questions, queries or concerns. We’d also find out which areas you want treated, your expectations, medical history and allergies. From that, we’d book you in once we’ve determined your dosage, take before photos, perform the treatment and get you in for a review 2 weeks later to take your after photos and assess if any further treatment is needed.

And dermal (lip) fillers-how do they work?

Dermal fillers are hyaluronic acid, which is a non-permanent substance that is injected into the body or the border of the lip to enhance and volumise the lips. A full consultation is undertaken firstly to discuss what the client wants and hopes to achieve from the treatment. The dermal filler is injected either using a needle or blunt cannula into the lip following cleaning of the lips with an anti-septic solution. A local anaesthetic cream is applied prior to the procedure to reduce discomfort.

Who is the ideal candidate for dermal fillers?

Realistically anyone can have dermal fillers providing they understand and consent to the procedure and have no medical or physical contraindications. They are not just for volumising, they are excellent at softening or removing the fine lines on the top lip as well as hydrating the delicate tissue of the lip.

How would you look after your lips after having them filled?

Following treatment with dermal fillers post treatment advice would be given to ensure that they look after them for the best results. This would include use of cool packs to reduce any swelling, treating them gently, avoiding extreme heat for a two week post procedure etc.

Is there any bruising? How long does it take to settle down?

There’s a little bit of swelling, but this should go down within a few days. You don’t need to have any days off work, although they can be a little tender the next day or two. If you’re having them done prior to an event, we’d recommend giving yourself at least a week to get used to them and for the swelling to reduce.

Can a client choose how big they want their lips to go or are there restrictions on the amount you can use?

The trend nowadays is to have natural looking lips, however some clients do want larger lips and prefer a less subtle look. I would always advise a client to gradually go bigger and I wouldn’t treat anybody who I felt that treatment would make them look ridiculous or cause them harm. Fortunately I have never come across anyone wanting huge lips as most clients prefer a subtle natural look to their lips.
