2Funky Music Cafe presents Lowkey live
2Funky Music Cafe presents Lowkey, live on Thursday 21 September, 7pm. A rapper with a strong fan base and a charismatic stage presence, Lowkey has featured at Glastonbury, T in the Park and Electric Proms to name a few. The event is presented in association with Colab2.
Lowkey is an MC with political activism at the forefront of his hip hop rhymes. He began rapping aged 12 and released his first mixed tape (Key to the Game) in his teens. His first proper album, Dear Listener, was released in 2009. Around this time, he also collaborated with members of Reverend and the Makers, Babyshambles and Arctic Monkeys in a group called Mongrel.
What followed was a period of charity work and humanitarian missions to Palestine before the release of Soundtrack the Struggle in 2011.
In 2012, Lowkey took a break from performing to focus on studying. He returned to music in 2016
with his single Ahmed, exploring the refugee crisis. Lowkey is a Stop the War Coalition member, and has written political articles for The Guardian and other publications. Political lyrics have been a strong feature of his work, with titles including Terrorist? (2010), Obama Nation (2010), Children of Diaspora (2016) and Ghosts of Grenfell (2017).
Lowkey will have support for this Leicester event from Mic Righteous, who has previously supported Wretch 32, and featured on remixes of tracks by Ed Sheeran and Emeli Sande. Other support artists are Awate, Lady Sanity, Loaneski and Comprehend. DJ’s for this Leicester event will be Miss C Brown and Afrospace.
