Female networking initiative Girls Empowered launches in Leicester

25th May 2017 saw the official launch of Leicester-based female networking initiative, Girls Empowered. The initiative, founded by Charlotte Hayto, aims to empower girls and women across Leicester to make movement in businesses, whether existing or new.

Girls Empowered recognised that girls are rising up, receiving better education and opting for degrees in business at top universities. The rate of UK female entrepreneurs is growing at three times the rate of male entrepreneurs. Despite this, female-run businesses have just 27% turnover of male-run businesses. Girls Empowered has been set up to bridge the gap between schools/universities and the workplace, as well as to teach new entrepreneurs how to increase revenues and reputation, through talks from successful business women.

The launch took place at The Shed, one of the city’s best-loved music venues, recently taken over and refurbished by Elisabeth Barker-Carley, one of the evening’s speakers. The Shed’s refurbishment allowed Girls Empowered to utilise the space for business use, with a large new window providing light and the newer layout allowing for seating.

Guests of the launch were treated to prosecco and canapes while networking, before hearing both Elisabeth and Charlotte speak about their own career journeys. Charlotte also shared the founding values Girls Empowered was built on, future plans for the company – which very much focused on the creation of a community –  and how attendees will be able to get involved.

The next event was also announced at the launch, a Masterclass taking place on the 29th June 2017 with Gemma Clarke from Tangle Teezer.

Charlotte Hayto, Founder said, “Seeing women of all ages and from all backgrounds come together for the Girls Empowered launch was truly amazing. The atmosphere of the evening was great and I think a part of that came from all the amazing women that were involved in the planning and execution of the launch, as well as those who came along to support us. We’re now really excited for our Masterclass, particularly as Gemma will be joining us. She’s had an amazing business journey and we can’t wait for this to be shared with the women of Leicester. This is just the beginning of the Girls Empowered journey and we can’t wait to see what’s next, in Leicester and beyond.”
