Runners brave the British summer for first Run 5.30 Leicester event
Over 100 runners gathered in Victoria Park at the crack of dawn this morning ahead of the Leicester debut of Italian running phenomenon Run 5.30 UK. Decked out in bright blue t-shirts, people from all walks of life and some four-legged friends set off on the 5k course around the city centre at 5.30am.
The typical wet British summer weather didn’t dampen the spirits of all involved as the participants followed the route past some of the best known Leicester landmarks including New Walk and the Cathedral. At the end of the 5k all participants received a medal and a fruit breakfast accompanied with smiles and congratulations from the Run 5.30 team and fellow runners.
Leicester was picked out as one of only three cities in the UK to host Run 5.30 following a successful year for Italy-Leicester sporting relations. The unique event is non-competitive and sees people of all ages and backgrounds joining together to start their day off right – some bringing their four-legged friends along with them.
Nik Emmonds, Event Director at Perfect Motion, who are engaged to deliver Run 5.30 in the UK, said;
“We were really excited to bring Run 5.30 to Leicester this year, and in Leicester blue shirts no less. It is great to see people out and enjoying themselves at such a unique event, especially at such an early hour.
“There is a great deal of camaraderie at Run 5.30 events and that is just one of the many things that makes it special and the perfect start to the day.”
The last event of the UK leg of the Run 5.30 World Tour takes place next Friday (15th) in Derby.
