The complete afternoon treat at North Bar & Kitchen.
There has always been the long standing tradition of “Ladies that lunch’ and now with the increase of afternoon tea’s I thought this is something I have to try. So off I headed to North Bar & Kitchen, with my friend, Jenny Cross to try out their version of the afternoon delight.
North Bar is situated on Hinckley Road and a very welcome addition to the West End. It’s the brain child of two friends who wanted to bring good, quality, fresh food in a relaxed environment to the area, and they have certainly managed to just that, receiving rave reviews on Tripadvisor. It is so easy to see why.
Arriving at the well-lit bar to a lovely warm welcome from our host Maxine, I was soon followed by my companion for the afternoon and we were swiftly shown to our table and offered a glass of something fizzy. Well how can girls say no to that?? The table was dressed beautifully, with everything we would need for our Afternoon Tea and, surrounded by ladies who were already enjoying their own, I couldn’t wait to see what we would be trying.
Champagne poured, Maxine then returned with our little plated stacked full of delights. It looked so good that neither of us could wait to tuck in. Working from the lowest plate up, we had a beautiful selection of sandwiches on a selection of different breads. Both munching our way through the Smoked Salmon and cream cheese, cucumber, ham and mustard plus egg and cress, whilst enjoying our fizz, it’s easy to see why afternoon tea is fast becoming a new trend.
Here in the office, it is a well-known fact that I am a big lover of all things sweet. So to be presented so many homemade cakes is my idea of heaven. Starting with the scones, I actually squealed a little to discover that they are so fresh they were still warm. Topped with butter, delicious jam and clotted cream you can have them just the way you like. Imagine…… That was just the first of the sweets to start with.
The cakes do vary slightly as they are all freshly made for each day. We got to enjoy homemade sacher torte, strawberry delight (and it really was one!), cherry and almond cake, mini lemon meringue and both mini coffee and chocolate Éclairs. We both felt like our eyes were bigger than our bellies but we fought through. Once finished we could both just sit back and breathe and enjoy a lovely pot of English Breakfast Tea. The whole thing is very reasonably priced and you can upgrade to a sparkling Afternoon Tea if you wanted an extra little treat.
Having tried food there in the evening this really is just as good. Booking is essential, due to everything being made freshly on the premises and there is a selection of teas and coffees that can accompany. If you are looking for something to brighten up your afternoon this is certainly the little treat you need.
Afternoon Tea is available daily from 2pm – 5pm and start from £10.50 per person
