A Blooming Marvellous Musical at the Belgrade Theatre
Coventry’s award-winning flower shop, Hubbard’s Florists, were treated to a visit from the cast of the blooming marvellous musical Little Shop of Horrors this week! Currently playing at the Belgrade Theatre until Saturday, this cult classic sci-fi musical stars X Factor’s Rhydian Roberts, West End actor Sam Lupton and a carnivorous plant named Audrey II.
In search of food for their flesh-eating friend, Rhydian and Sam took Audrey II on a trip Hubbard’s Florists where their expert team were able to suppress his lust for lunch. Based in Holbrooks, Hubbard’s offers floral designs for weddings, funerals, corporate functions and special occasions and holds three RHS Chelsea Gold Medals to its name.
This charmingly kooky musical is one of the longest running off-Broadway shows of all time and tells the story of florist assistant Seymour, played by Sam Lupton, whose life on Skid Row is as dull as can be. He soon gains fame and fortune when he discovers an exotic plant with a macabre craving. Secretly in love with his colleague Audrey he names the plant Audrey II in her honour.
Audrey’s evil boyfriend and sadistic dentist Orin Scrivello is played by X Factor star Rhydian Roberts, who makes a mysterious disappearance when Seymour discovers Audrey II is a foul-mouthed carnivore with an appetite for human flesh!
Based on the iconic 1986 B-movie, Little Shop of Horrors contains a musical score written by Alan Menken, best-known for his numerous Walt Disney film scores such as The Little Mermaid.
Little Shop of Horrors originally opened Off-Off-Broadway in 1982 before moving to the Orpheum Theatre Off-Broadway later that year, where it ran for five years and won numerous awards including the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Musical and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical.
It opened in the West End the following year, and in 1986 was adapted into the now iconic cult film starring Rick Moranis, Ellen Greene and Steve Martin. Other notable stage productions include the 2006 London revival at the Menier Chocolate Factory and in the West End, starring Sheridan Smith as Audrey.
Produced by Sell a Door Theatre Company whose previous productions include the smash-hit musicals, Avenue Q and American Idiot, this production is currently touring theatres across the UK.
Tickets for Little Shop of Horrors are available now priced from £22.50 and can be booked by calling the Belgrade’s Box Office team on 024 7655 3055 or visit www.belgrade.co.uk.
