Celebration of Black music and arts, Festival2Funky returns for 2019

Now in its sixth year, Festival2Funky is a fantastic celebration of Black music and arts, running from 24-26 May 2019 at 2Funky Music Café, The 2Funky Lounge and 2Funky Street Kitchen in Leicester’s vibrant West End.

The main festival line up has now been announced and includes Mampi Swift, Natasha Watts, Mad Professor, Rodney P and more.

KINGDEM TOUR: Rodney P, Black Twang & TY

The 2019 Kingdem Tour sees three of UK Hip Hop’s most heavyweight artists join forces live and on the same stage, in a series of UK dates. Rodney P, Ty and Black Twang need little introduction – all three artists have individually contributed to the UK Hip Hop canon in ways few others can match.

Making It In the Music Industry’ Talk, Q&A & Networking Event Fri 24 May, 5-7pm

A panel-led talk and Q&A on effective ways to break into the music industry, accompanied by networking opportunities! Perfect for up-and-coming singers, MCs, DJs, producers and managers. Panellists are influential music industry specialists.

  • Our Chair Tania Lee has managed Formation Records, 5HQ and Ebony Records. She established DJ management agency UMC, and has a wealth of industry knowledge to share.
  • Ray Paul has worked in the music industry for over 30 years. He was part of the original team that set up BBC 1Xtra, and was head of specialist programmes and live events there for 7 years.
  • Reggie Styles (broadcaster, PR strategist, DJ) has worked for Hard Zone marketing, with clients such as Def Jam and Warner Music. He has appeared on BBC & Channel 4 and is currently Senior Radio Plugger at Urban Soul Food.
Formation Drum & Bass/ Jungle

Drum & bass legend Mampi Swift has been a key player on the scene since the early nineties. In the DJ booth, Mampi is a force to be reckoned with. DJ SS’ World of Drum & Bass parties are momentous. SS has featured high profile artists on his Formation label including Carl Cox, Grooverider and Roni Size.’

FUN DMC

FUN DMC is a super-fly party experience, designed for children aged 6 weeks+ and their parents. There are areas to dance, try on fancy dress, practise graffiti, or just chill. Get ready for hip-hop, funk, disco and block party anthems. Naturally we’ll be keeping it clean. Resident founder Spin Doctor (The Doctor’s Orders) is a dad deeply entrenched in the music scene, having DJ’ed many of London’s premiere events.

ILUVLYRICS Spoken Word & Poetry Slam

John Berkavitch comperes this ILUVLYRICS Slam, where wordsmiths will compete for a cash prize. Whatever your lyrical style, if you have talent we want to hear it! Performers should arrive at 1pm pre-rehearsed with a poetry or spoken word piece of no more than 3 minutes in length (no backing tracks allowed). Host John Berkavitch is a former UK Slam Poetry Champion, who has performed at Glastonbury, Latitude, Bestival & Reading.

Nubian Soul Queens: Natasha Watts & Support

Hailing from humble origins, Natasha Watts is now a multi-award winning artist. She has previously won Best UK Soul Artist (Soul Survivors Magazine), and played London’s Jazz Cafe, The Royal Albert Hall and many other prestigious venues. BBC Radio 1Xtra’s Seani B, bringing you reggae/ dancehall/ soca party vibes from the Caribbean and beyond. Think nu skool & ol skool music, mash ups, remixes, sound effects, pull ups and everything else associated with the Seani B experience! Featuring internationally acclaimed singer Christopher Ellis (son of iconic reggae legend Alton Ellis).

An Afternoon of Jazz: Hypernova & Support

Hypernova are an explosive collective of young musicians from London, featuring instrumentalists from Nihilism, Invariance and Where Pathways Meet. Hypernova fuse a wide range of influences, including renaissance lute music, bebop and jazz ‘drill’ to deliver their ‘neo-bebop’ sound that is sure to get you moving.

Mad Professor & Sir Coxsone

Leading dub music producer Mad Professor has remixed and collaborated with a variety of high profile artists, including Massive Attack, The Orb, Grace Jones and Jah Shaka, among many others. Jamaican born sound system extraordinaire Lloyd Coxsone has been promoting reggae music to the max since the sixties. His work has influenced a generation of sound-systems.


Festival2Funky will encompass reggae, dubstep, bassline, drum ‘n’ bass, R&B, jungle, soul, house, hip-hop and jazz. Exhilarating live performances across these genres, will feature alongside new collaborations, masterclasses, graffiti workshops, DJ sets, spoken word, after-parties and more!
