In search of enlightenment: All You Need is LSD comes to the Belgrade Theatre
How far would you go in search of a good story? For adventurous playwright Leo Butler, an invitation to take part in the world’s first LSD trials since the 1960s proved far too intriguing to turn down…
Coming to the Belgrade Theatre this November following rave reviews at the Birmingham REP, Butler’s latest play, All You Need Is LSD, takes a marked departure from his usual gritty realism, tumbling down the psychedelic rabbit hole in search of enlightenment – or at least some good material!
Party history, part wild fantasy, this darkly humorous production combines real-life stories with the controversial research of former government drugs tsar, Professor David Nutt, to playfully dissect the drugs debate.
Historical and fictional characters collide in off-the-wall scenes as acclaimed production company Told By An Idiot bring their bold, anarchic spirit to bear on Butler’s own experience as a medical guinea pig in 2015.
Expect encounters with everyone from Aldous Huxley to Alice in Wonderland, Albert Hoffmann to Ronald Reagan and The Beatles to Steve Jobs as Told By An Idiot explore questions around freedom, fear, life and death, questioning whether the world still needs a psychedelic revolution.
Leo Butler said: “This play takes inspiration from a lifetime of my experiences – from a misspent youth through to the responsibilities of fatherhood, and from being a guinea pig in medical trials to actually creating the play itself.”
All You Need is LSD shows at the Belgrade Theatre Coventry from Thursday 15 until Saturday 17 November.
