Emma Rice Stars in Wise Children at the Belgrade Theatre
Welcome to the Wrong Side of the Tracks – Emma Rice stars in Wise Children at the Belgrade Theatre
Renowned for her “exuberantly impish”, playfully self-conscious style, there can be few theatre-makers better suited to bring Angela Carter’s riotous final novel to the stage than the endlessly inventive Emma Rice.
Having adapted and directed Wise Children for the stage, the multi-talented mischief-maker will now tread the boards herself when the production arrives in Coventry next month, stepping into the leading role of former show girl Nora Chance.
Much like her character, Rice has made a name for revelling in the magic and madness of the theatre in all its forms, with an energetic, playful approach and dogged disregard for the rules that seamlessly blends elements of “high” and “low” art, resulting in a heady theatrical cocktail capable of intoxicating audiences of all stripes.
Just like Nora and her twin sister Dora, who are disowned by, and eventually reconciled with, their Shakespearean actor father, Rice has had a complex relationship with the “legit” stage, leaving her role as Artistic Director of Shakespeare’s Globe in 2018 due to creative differences.
Marking the debut of her new company of the same name, Wise Children is Rice’s first new production since her departure from the Globe, and is a triumphant return to form, harking back to her earlier work with the pioneering Kneehigh Theatre. And while it might not be Shakepeare per se (at least not quite as you know it), this big, bawdy tangle of theatrical joy and pain has received near unanimous praise wherever it has travelled so far.
Wise Children shows at the Belgrade Theatre Coventry 2-6 April 2019. Tickets are available to book now by calling the box office on 024 7655 3055 or visiting www.belgrade.co.uk where prices are cheaper.
