QUAD in Derby announces dates for festivals in 2019

QUAD in Derby has announced dates for its four major festivals in 2019.

FORMAT International Photography Festival – 15th March to 14th April 2019.

Paracinema a film festival dedicated to genres outside the mainstream – Friday 3rd to Monday 6th May 2019.

Summer Nights festival of outdoor film screenings – 1st July to 22nd September 2019.

 Derby Film Festival Premiere screenings, special guests, talks and events – 14th to 17th November 2019.

FORMAT International Photography Festival is one of the UK’s leading international contemporary festivals of photography and related media. FORMAT was established in 2004 and features the best in contemporary and archive photography. The theme for the 2019 festival is ‘FOREVER//NOW’ exploring our attachment to the idea of forever and how we seek to represent our everchanging world, society, lands and histories through photography. Key FORMAT Festival events will include:

FORMAT19 Conference, on Friday 15th March, presenting a range of high-profile international speakers, artists, writers and academics who will explore and discuss themes relating to FORMAT19. FORMAT International Portfolio Review, on Saturday 16th March from 9:30am to 4:00pm, is the UK’s biggest annual international photography portfolio review for photographers with over fifty international expert reviewers, including photo editors, curators, publishers and festival directors.  FORMAT Photobook Market, from 15th to 17th March, features over 20 international publishers and collectives.

In QUAD Galleries, as part of FORMAT19, there will be three exhibitions on display from 15th March until 9th June 2019. Mutable, Multiple, in QUAD Gallery One, features six artists Max Pinckers, Edgar Martins, Stefanie Moshammer, Amani Willett, Anne Golaz and Virginie Rebetez with photographic works that challenge modes of documentary and storytelling; exploring how narrative, history, memory and myth can be recalibrated as a way of coming to terms with complex and changing realities. Kensuke Koike, in QUAD Gallery Two, is the UK premiere and new commission by the Japan born, Venice based artist Kensuke Koike, who works with images to produce intricate collage, installation and sculpture.  FORMAT FOREVER//NOW (Open Call) in QUAD Extra Gallery Spaces, is a group exhibition of work by photographers and artists selected via an international open call. Artists include: Maria Sturm, Karl Ohiri, Liza Ambrossio, Steven Barritt, Garrett Grove, Xu Guanyu, IC Visual Lab (Alejandro Acin & Isaac Blease), Seunggu Kim and Gloria Oyarzabal.

Paracinema is a brand new film festival dedicated to genres outside the mainstream. The festival motto is anything goes! From horror, sci-fi and fantasy to exploring other genres and sub-genres that don’t usually get the opportunity to play on the big screen. Paracinema was launched in 2018 as a subsection to Derby Film Festival but due to its success has launched into an even of its own. Expect the unexpected in this new and exciting addition to QUAD’s range of festivals.

Derby Film Festival offers a rich programme of Premiere screenings, special guests, talks and events. Now in its sixth year, the festival includes the best in world cinema, industry events, with a programme reflecting the history of cinema to inform and inspire, but also that delight and entertain. Past guests have included Sir John Hurt, Sir Ben Kingsley, Sir Christopher Frayling, Brian Blessed, Carol Cleveland, Dexter Fletcher, Terry Jones, Dame Janet Suzman, Simon Callow, Jack O’Connell and festival Patrons David Morrissey and Anwen Hurt.

Summer Nights is a festival of outdoor film screenings in heritage locations throughout the summer. Summer Nights Outdoor Film Festival is back for a ninth year and has expanded to seventeen locations across the UK. Presented by QUAD on an inflatable twelve metre screen, the festival offers the chance to enjoy a unique open air cinematic experience in venues such as RHS Garden Wisley, Nostell, Wentworth Woodhouse, Harlow Carr, Harrogate, Dunham Massey and Attingham Park, as well as Derbyshire venues of Kedleston Hall, Calke Abbey and Hardwick Hall.

Summer Nights outdoor film festival takes place in beautiful heritage locations across the UK from 1st July to 22nd September 2019.
